¡Vayamos a Tropico!

My little Island Paradise…  You have been keeping me away from writing a post or two, now, I guess, I’d write about you!  Last Sunday at SM Megamall during the Anicon, Biankita asked me why I haven’t been updating my blog…

I haven’t been much of a pc gamer, but surprise, surprise, surprise, I found an old game that has piqued my interest.

Gameplay is very simple.  Run your island, stay in power for the duration of the game and meet the goals you have set…  by any means possible in the game.

It is very interesting.  The game is set in an island where you are the absolute ruler.  You have a choice to either be pro-american or pro-russian.  You can tailor your character’s strengths and weaknesses.   You can be known for your family values or you can be the great schmoozola.

It is very exciting.  There are different factions in your little island paradise.  Your adviser reports what is going on outside your little tower.  He tells you if the president is gaining more enemies, the military is planning a coup d’ etat or the construction workers are rebelling.  An almanac is being shown at the end of each year to report the status of your dear little

tropico…  economy, politics, people.

It shows what your best products have been for the past year, how much happiness is being felt by the constituents and which industries have been giving the highest revenues.

It also shows your Tourism Rating, your food quality and your expenses.

Your little island has a very rich history.  It has untouched Pyramids.  You can decide to develop these resources and market them as part of your Tourism Industry.  Ventures like this would definitely need people to take care of it.  So, if you have the money, you can always pay for a foreign College graduate and hire him as your curator.

That’s not all….  you can also build hotels and beach resorts to cater to tourists.  There are different levels of tourism.  you can have those who would merely want to go to cheap hotels.  These people do not demand so much, for as long as they can get around your island.

Satisfaction would depend on how much happiness has been felt in Tropico.  Elections being called for by the Tropicans depends on how much they still want you as El Presidente…   But, as the gameplay dictates that you are el Supremo, you can always adjust the election results to keep yourself in the position.

Game span varies to how long you would want the game to be.  The game may be old, but I tell you…  It is very entertaining.

    It’s kinda like a cross between the Civilization game and Age of Mythology. I got addicted to playing those for a while. It sounded really fun and interesting when you told us about it. Might try it sometime if I ever get my hands on it. :)

    @biankita
    it is pretty effective zapping me out of the stresses that i am wallowing in at the moment. i could choose to be the ruthless leader that i would wish i could be sometimes. hehehe

    “so sad”! :P

    for those who are not familiar with the game, those are the lines being said by the voice over if you stumble upon someone who died in the game. It’s funny, coz you would actually hear the “aagh” and the thud if the person who died in the game is close by.
